FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much does in-home personal training cost in NYC?
Solo training starts at $155-165 per 45-minute session. Couples training is $180 per session. Final rate depends on session frequency, program goals, and other factors discussed during the initial consultation.
What equipment do I need at home?
Nothing to start. Your bodyweight is enough for the first phase of training, especially if you are new or coming back after time off. As you progress, a pair of adjustable dumbbells and a resistance band or two opens up more options. I will tell you what to buy and when based on your goals. No need to set up a home gym before we begin.
How long until I see results?
Depends on what you mean by results, your starting point, and how consistent you are. Most clients feel meaningful changes in energy, sleep, and how they move within 3 to 4 weeks. Visible strength and body composition changes take 8 to 12 weeks of consistent training, two to three sessions per week, with appropriate nutrition. Anyone promising faster than that is selling something.
Can you help me lose weight?
Yes. Weight loss comes down to a sustainable caloric deficit combined with strength training to protect muscle mass during the process. I work with clients on both sides of that equation: building a program that supports the goal, and helping you set up a nutrition framework you can actually live with. If you are using a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic or Wegovy, I have experience programming around appetite suppression and adequate protein intake.
What is your cancellation policy?
12 hours notice or the session is charged. I make exceptions for genuine emergencies, illness, and family situations. The policy exists because sessions are reserved time. If you cancel inside the window, I cannot fill that slot.
Do you train in apartment buildings?
Yes. I train clients in their NYC apartments, in building gym rooms, and outdoors in parks. I do not train at commercial gyms. If your building has a fitness room or gym, that works. If not, your living room works too. I can design effective workouts for very small spaces. It is NY, we adapt.
What if I have an injury or chronic condition?
This is a strength of my practice. I hold a Medical Exercise Specialist credential and have over 25 years of experience training clients through injuries, post-surgical recovery, and chronic conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, back pain, and joint replacements. If you are working with a physical therapist, I can coordinate with them. If you are not sure whether you should train, ask your doctor first, then call me.
Do you train older adults?
Many of my clients are over 50 (I also work with student athletes). I specialize in training older adults, including clients in their 70s, 80s, and 90s. The training looks different from what a 25-year-old needs, but the principles are the same: progressive overload, mobility work, strength trainingh and balance training, dosed appropriately. Older adults have the most to gain from strength training, particularly in protecting against falls, preserving independence, and maintaining muscle mass.
How is in-home personal training different from a gym trainer?
I come to you. No commute, no waiting for equipment, no awkward gym social dynamics. Sessions happen in your space on your schedule. I also bring over 20 years of experience working with all ages and a range of injuries and conditions, which is a different skill set from what most floor trainers at commercial gyms develop. If you want a trainer who tracks your progress over years, programs around your specific limitations, and adjusts based on what your body is doing on a given day, in-home is the right format.
How do we get started?
Send a message through the contact form at joachimstraining.com/contact-trainernyc or email DPJoachim@gmail.com. We will have a short conversation about your goals, training history, any limitations, and your schedule. From there, we set up a first session. No long-term contracts. We agree on a starting cadence, see how it goes, and adjust from there.
